  • Archipelago of a Thousand Picturesque Coral Islands (Atolls): An archipelago of a thousand picturesque coral islands (atolls) that appear as a continuous or broken ring surrounding a lagoon. More precisely, an atoll is an elevation on the ocean floor crowned with a coral superstructure, forming a reef with a group of islands separated by channels. These channels connect the ocean to the lagoon. If there are no channels, the land forms a continuous ring. In this case, the water in the lagoon may be less salty than in the ocean. The elevation on the ocean floor usually takes the form of a cone, formed by an extinct volcano.

The population is around 395,000 people. The islands rise just slightly above ocean level, with the highest point in the archipelago being 2.4 meters on Addu Atoll. The total area is 90,000 square kilometers, with a land area of 298 square kilometers. Male is the sole city and port in the archipelago, located on the atoll of the same name.

The Maldives is known for its beautiful white beaches, clear turquoise waters, and picturesque coral reefs.
