The Republic of Maldives is situated in the equatorial waters of the Indian Ocean, approximately 700 km southwest of Sri Lanka. It consists of a chain of 20 atolls, comprising 1,192 coral islands. The population is around 395,000 people. The islands rise just slightly above ocean level, with the highest point in the archipelago being 2.4 meters on Addu Atoll. The total area is 90,000 square kilometers, with a land area of 298 square kilometers. Male is the sole city and port in the archipelago, located on the atoll of the same name.
The Maldives is known for its beautiful white beaches, clear turquoise waters, and picturesque coral reefs. It is one of the countries with the lowest elevation above sea level in the world, with an average elevation of about 1.5 meters, making it vulnerable to rising sea levels due to climate change.

The climate is equatorial monsoon. Under the influence of the northeast monsoons, it is dry from November to March, and under the influence of the southwest monsoons, it is rainy from June to August. The weather is hot year-round, with air temperatures ranging from 24 to 30 °C. The air temperature never drops below +17 °C in January-February and never rises above +32 °C in April-May.
